When it comes to making arrangements for a loved one, we understand that every decision matters. Direct cremations provide a simple and dignified way to honour the life of someone special without the need for a traditional funeral service. Based in Caldicot, Joanne Hume & Son Limited is here to guide you through this process, ensuring it’s as smooth and respectful as possible. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss our direct cremation services with a member of the team.

Simple, Affordable & Dignified Cremations

We offer simple, affordable, and dignified cremations that focus on honouring your loved one’s life with respect and care. Our direct cremation services eliminate unnecessary complexities, allowing you to navigate this difficult time with ease. We’re here to support you every step of the way. Don’t hesitate to reach out to discuss how we can assist you during this challenging period.

Unattended Cremations

Many people don’t realise that they can choose to use us for unattended (often called direct) cremations and burials and that we charge a great deal less as we are not a national company and all our unattended cremations and burials take place locally.

Our unattended cremations currently cost £1095 and these include supplying of a silk lined foiled oak coffin with nameplate, dealing with all legal documentation and a home visit to discuss everything with you.

We return the ashes in an attractive scatterbox which is also included in the price of £1095.

We will always discuss other options, if for example you want a wooden ashes casket with nameplate (a small additional charge is made for this) and if you want the ashes interred in a cemetery or churchyard we are here to help with this process. Some people like to have a memorial service or thanksgiving service after an unattended cremation has taken place.

We also offer direct cremation and direct burial funeral plans too. Just ask us for more information.

What Is A Direct Cremation?

Direct cremation is the process of cremating the deceased without a funeral service beforehand. This option allows families to focus on their loved one’s memory in a more private setting. It can also be a more cost-effective way to handle final arrangements.

A direct cremation service includes the following:

  • Transferring into our Care – We will bring your loved one into our care from their place of death and will always ask if you would like them to be dressed in their favourite outfit. You will have the option, if you so wish, to view them in our Chapel of Rest.

  • Coffin – A silk lined coffin that will be suitable for the cremation is provided.

  • Cremation – The cremation takes place without a ceremony or mourners present.

  • Ashes – The ashes are returned to the family at a time of your choosing in an ashes scatter box. If you choose to have an ashes casket, this may be an additional cost.

  • Documentation – The required paperwork and arrangements are managed by the funeral director.

  • Support – We will provide assistance and support throughout the entire process.

  • Transportation – The deceased is transported to the crematorium in a vehicle from our fleet.

  • Fees – The Crematorium fee is covered within our fee.

A direct cremation differs from a standard funeral as it offers a simpler and more affordable option without a formal funeral ceremony or service and has no mourners present.  A direct cremation can also provide more flexibility in terms of timing and location for memorial gatherings.

A standard funeral often includes a church or crematorium ceremony, a procession and some families choose to have refreshments following the service, (this is formally known as a wake)

Another option we can offer is a Witnessed Direct Cremation, which can accommodate up to 10 people in the Crematorium Chapel, with a piece of music played for families to reflect. If this is something you would like to consider, please get in touch for more information.
